All You Want to Know About Apple Snails (Mystery Snails, Too)
My Mystery Snail, Gary (named by an 11 year old) is floating around in my aquarium quite a bit since I upped the temp* to discourage disease after giving the aquarium a thorough cleaning a couple of weeks ago. So, I went to the web to find out if my snail was sick or something and I found a web site written by Stijn A. I. Ghesquiere, PhD that told me all I wanted to know (and more!) about Mystery Snails.

The Apple Snail (Ampullariidae) Website
My snail is actually an Apple Snail, the pet store sells these snails as Mystery Snails and sometimes a Mystery Snail is an Apple Snail, but sometimes it’s not. Check out above-mentioned web site to learn more about that.
As for Gary, turns out that Apple/Mystery Snails just float around sometimes. And while it seems that the higher temp has helped to keep the fishies from getting stressed and sick after the big clean-up, The Apple Snail Website says that the higher temp will up Gary’s metabolism and shorten his life. Bummer.
*I read in a few places that some harmful aquarium organisms cannot live in an environment with a temp of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. If I find these resources again, will link to them.
