Add a Mystery Snail
Along with the algae eaters, we also bought a Golden Mystery Snail this weekend to help withe algae control. So far the snail is being rather elusive. I had treated the water with an antibiotic for a few days last week in case the Pleco that died so soon was sick. I changed the filter this morning in case traces of medication in the water are making the snail sick. The carbon in the filter will remove any remaining meds. A Google search reveals that this is an Apple Snail, for what it’s worth.

Here’s a photo of what the snail looks like as well as how to care for Apple Snails; ours looks like the bottom photo. This article notes that the snails generate a lot of waste so the filter should be large. Our filter is over-sized for the tank, something I did on purpose. But, with the way the Dwarf African Frog poops so much, I sure didn’t need to be dealing with snail poop, too.
And why is it that I am the only one in the family who deals with the poop? Hey, I’m the one who scoops the cat’s box every day, too!
