Faith: Notes from My Utmost for His Highest
This entry in My Utmost for His Highest discussed the balance of faith and common sense, which is something I struggle with at times. I can honestly say that now that I have a relationship with God, faith usually wins out when I sense He wants me to go down one path even though the common sense path is the one that is well-lit. The common sense path”is often easier to take than the faith path, but I have to keep in mind that God is not always the one who is lighting the common sense path. We need to take care to follow the right light.
The common sense path is easy to follow because it is composed of our worldly experiences and knowledge, and because of this, we can see what is at the end of the path - or at least we think we can. The faith path is most often lit little by little, showing us just enough of the path so we do not stumble yet not showing us the destination the path leads to.
Actually, the faith path is more fun to follow in our often mundane lives. It is exciting to see what God will do next and with all the responsibilities in our lives, a relief to turn control over to our Lord, although that sometimes means our friends and family think we are kind of crazy.
“Until we know Jesus, God is merely a concept, and we can’t have faith in Him.” is one sentence from this entry in My Utmost for His Highest that really touched my heart. Growing up, I was taught to believe in God, Christ and the Holy Spirit without question, but until I read the New Testament many years later the Trinity was merely a concept to me - a concept that I was not worthy to be engaged with in every day life. The New Testament moved God from concept to reality through the example Christ brought to Earth and this allowed my faith to grow. Faith trumps concept. Faith trumps common sense.
He who has seen me has seen the Father (John 14:9)
My Utmost for His Highest is a Christian classic first printed in 1935 with messages that remain incredibly pertinent decades later.
