Adversity: Notes from My Utmost for His Highest
“In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33)
Christians are not delivered from adversity on Earth. As you learn to follow Christ and your desire to walk His path grows, you will experience less personal adversity because you will no longer make as many choices that result in harm to you or others. But, we live on Earth and not in Eden, and so adversity continues to exist even after you take Jesus Christ as your personal savior.
So, what are you to do about the adversity you experience daily? My Utmost for His Highest explains that God does not deliver us from adversity, but he does take us through it. Our humanity calls on God for deliverance from physical, mental and spiritual discomfort or pain, and Christ called out for deliverance from crucifixion in Gethsemane, if that were God’s will.
Just as Christ endured and pushed through His fate through His faith, we can do the same starting with these truths:
- Christ has already overcome evil. I personally find that clinging to the knowledge that the battle is already won empowers me to move forward and do God’s work because it reminds me of satan’s insignificance.
- Another point in My Utmost for His Highest is that God does not give us a life without stress, God gives us life as we overcome what life brings.
- Difficult and painful times will come into your life. See the opportunities presented in these times and move forward, which is something those who do not seek God’s wisdom cannot do.
- “No harm befalls the righteous, but the wicked have their fill of trouble.” Proverbs 12:21
- “God never gives us strength for tomorrow, or for the next hour, but only for the strain of the moment.” My Utmost for His Highest August 2
