Alternatives to “User”
I struggle with the term “user” when writing about how to use financial software on About.com, and I often stop writing to try to come up with a better term. Sometimes I think of a better term, sometimes not. The word “user” seems kind of harsh to me, or maybe my mind makes a reference to drug user when I am writing about software users. Whatever the case me be, I’m not the only one to have an issue with “user”.

Jimmy Guterman on O’Reilly Radar dislikes being call a user, although he admits there are times the term can’t be avoided. The next time I am brainstorming to replace the word “user” in my writing, I’ll look over the comments in Don’t Call Me a User!
